Designing mobile app and web copy for Africa’s largest reward program

Shoprite Checkers is Africa's largest retailers. They serve more than 20 million customers across Africa monthly. Today, Xtra Savings, Checkers' rewards program, services more than 29 million registered rewards customers.

When I joined Checkers in 2019, Xtra Savings did not have a mobile app presence. They had a large number of legacy systems and processes that needed to be replaced digitally, and largely still relied on their physical store footprint over full e-commerce.

Shoprite Checkers was behind their competitors in terms of reward programs and wanted to introduce their first rewards app to give customers a more personalised shopping experience.

To solve this, I conceptualised and wrote the customer journeys and touch points for 2 react native applications and 2 new WhatsApp and USSD channels.

I also created the voice assets for their digitalisation.

Content’s role:

  • I developed voice and tone guide for Checkers’ digitalisation.

  • I created personalised copy for all customer touch points

  • I centralised voice and corporate identity assets.

  • I used research and analytics at the core of our online insights to inform copy decisions
